Main Points of the Introduction to Note to Self:
-We must not only preach the gospel to ourselves, but also the law.
-Without the law, we would have no idea about what is wrong, and what is right.
-The law reveals God's will for us, and how we should serve him.
-God has given us very specific commandments.
-The law also show us what is needed.
-When we look at the law, we should ask ourselves "what does God require of me?"
-Because of the law, we can see our desperate need for God, and we can fully appreciate Jesus' death and resurrection.
Preaching the Gospel to Ourselves:
The gospel is the good news that Jesus came down to earth, lived a
perfect life, died a sinner's death, rose again on the third day, and
ascended to the right hand of the Father, that all men might be saved.
Preaching the gospel to ourselves is, in essence, denying self and living
for Christ, while knowing that preaching the gospel to ourselves
applies to any and every situation. Since preaching the gospel to
ourselves applies to every situation, it therefore should be what we do
whenever we are faced with any hardship.
Jesus Is Your Righteous (His Life), Your Forgiveness (His Death), and Your Victory (His Resurrection):
-Through Christ’s resurrection, we can find strength to fight sin
-We can become victorious through His resurrection
-Even though we fail, when Jesus comes back, we will be raised as Christ was raised from the dead
Preaching Law and Gospel Together:
-The law is given to show us God’s way and our brokenness so that we will see our need for
redemption.
-In the Gospel we find our redemption.
-Now we see it is a delight to carry out the law, because even though we cannot keep it perfectly,
Jesus has kept it perfectly for us.
-Therefore preaching to ourselves puts us into a cycle of law and gospel where we move from
our guilt and need to God’s grace and provision and then back to the law with joyful and free
obedience.
-Preaching to yourself is, in a practical sense, like reading notes you have written to yourself.
They will often amount to important reminders about who we really are in ourselves and in
Christ.
-Preaching to yourself is reminding yourself of the truth (by God’s grace ).
Jesus Is Your
Righteous (His Life):
-Jesus’s life gives hope when we are broken
-Jesus’s life gives hope when we recognize our sin and
realize that we are incapable of keeping God’s commands.
-Encouragement can be found in Christ’s Righteousness
Jesus Is Your
Forgiveness (His Death):
-Jesus’s death is the payment for our sins
-We are still sinners, but have been cleansed and our sins
have been forgiven
-Because of Christ’s death, we can be reconciled with God
Jesus Is Your Victory (His
Resurrection):-Through Christ’s resurrection, we can find strength to fight sin
-We can become victorious through His resurrection
-Even though we fail, when Jesus comes back, we will be raised as Christ was raised from the dead

redemption.
